2015 Historic West Park House Tour
Need plans this weekend? Come see us at The West Park House Tour! Presented by The West Park Civic Association, the tour spans 11 historic properties in Allentown from the West Park neighborhood all the way into Center City. One of the stops on the tour is Jaindl Properties own, Shimer Mansion Carriage House!
Located at 1516 Court Street, the Carriage House is mid-renovation. What once served as the Shimer Mansions stables, is in the process of being transformed into Class-A office space. Upon completion, The Carriage House will pay homage to its former function with subtle equine features, and an overall rustic feel.
The entire Shimer Estate, was built in 1907 by the widow of Lehigh Portland Cement co-founder Alexander Shimer. Elizabeth Shimer, his widow, lived in the main home until her passing in 1924. While she originally used the Carriage House as stables, she quickly converted it into an automobile garage and a guest house for her staff members. After her death, The Shimer Estate was later sold to a local attorney and U.S. Congressman, Fred Gernerd. The Carriage House remained part of the property until Mr. Gernerd’s daughter, Margaret St. Mary, moved from the main home to the Carriage Guest House and sold the main home to a local real estate firm. Jaindl Properties bought the main home in 2011 and the Carriage House in 2014, finally reuniting The Shimer Estate.
We’re glad to not only be showing a building on the tour but also to be a sponsor for this event. The West Park Civic Association is an excellent organization that helps to preserve and honor Allentown’s history and we’re proud to work together with them in raising more awareness to the public!
